Emeli Sande Serenades SPIN’s Steve Madden
June 7th, 2012
Article by SarahLeave a comment? • Categorized under: Events

Last night’s Steve Madden Music Summer Series event in New York City featuring Emeli Sandé wasn’t just hot — it was humid. The guests at 100 Rivington cooled down with Tito’s Homemade Vodka cocktails and precipitation-covered bottles of Pacifico beer while DJ Kalkutta spun hits from Rihanna and Kanye West. But when the evening’s host, Miss Info, took the stage, the flush of the room came second to the anticipation for Sandé, the Scottish soul singer whose debut album Our Version of Events just got its U.S. release. Her stripped-down, four-song set turned a swaying crowd into an emotional band of belters from her kick-off, “Daddy,” to her best-known song, “Next to Me.” Her commanding voice added a new layer of heat, but with her kind of talent, the extra warmth was welcome. The positive review her album received in the New York Times today says a lot: “It’s full of nods to familiar soul sounds, but Ms. Sandé is revivifying styles that aren’t even all that dead, applying the dignified-throwback-soul idea to the music of the 1990s. The result is a new form, austere in the way classicists appreciate, but fundamentally young.”

The event was the second of a three-part series SPIN is hosting with Steve Madden Music that go down at the Steve Madden Store in New York’s Lower East Side. Stay tuned for info on the invite-only next party, which will take place in July!

Emeli Sande Would Like To Collaborate With Adele
June 6th, 2012
Article by Sarah1 Comment • Categorized under: News

The ‘Next To Me’ star admits she is a big fan of the ‘Rolling In The Deep’ star.

Emeli Sande has confessed that she would love to meet and eventually work with Adele.

The ‘My Kind Of Love’ star told MTV News that she is a huge fan of the ‘Someone Like You singer’ and that a collaboration between the pair is something she would be very keen to do.

“That would be amazing,” she admitted. “I still haven’t met her but I’d really like to work with her.”

Emeli’s real name is in fact Adele and she changed to her middle name in order to diffuse any confusion between the artists.

Speaking about the similarities, she added: “I’m a big fan of hers. It’s just a big coincidence – I’m glad I chose my middle [name] though.”

The Scottish star is preparing to release her debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’ in the US and will be performing alongside the likes of Usher and One Direction at the iTunes Festival 2012 in September at the Roundhouse in Camden, London.

Emeli Sande From Med School To Music
June 6th, 2012
Article by SarahLeave a comment? • Categorized under: News

Emeli Sandé started life with the name Adele. But just as she was coming up as a singer, another Adele picked up her first Brit Award in 2008 and went on to become a massive star. So Sandé decided to record under her middle name instead, and now she’s poised to become the next big “Adele” thanks to her soulful debut, Our Version of Events.

Speaking to MTV News about the release — out Tuesday (June 5) — the Scottish singer explained that she recorded it “without following any rules and regulations,” adding that the title reflects the universality of her album.

“Because they’re my stories, they’re my version of events of the past three years,” she said of the title’s meaning. “But I really hope people can hear their own stories within the songs and they can become our version of events.”

Some of the highlights on the album include “Next To Me,” her first Stateside single, which is all about the piano-driven melody and the power of Sandé’s voice. “I feel like ‘Next To Me’ is a great introduction because it’s a simple song that has a simple message for me,” she explained. “I wanted to introduce something that lyrically I’m proud of and introduces me both as an artist and as a writer.”

The video for her song “My Kind of Love” gives fans another piece of the Sandé puzzle. In the clip, a young woman battles cancer in a hospital. It’s all inspired by the time the singer spent studying medicine before deciding to pursue music.

“For ‘My Kind of Love,’ it was stories that I had from being a med student and kind of being on the ward and seeing these stories unfold and the kind of love you see in hospitals,” she explained. “[But] I always wanted to be a musician from when I was kid. It was always a massive dream of mine,” she said of the transition from medicine to music. “School was also really really important to me and having an education was top of my priority [list]. So I really wanted to have a degree before I tried anything in the music industry.”

Once she switched gears, Sandé began writing for artists like Cheryl Cole and Tinie Tempah. (“When the door opened for me and the opportunity came … I went for it,” she said.)

But back to that other Adele: Would Sandé ever consider collaborating with the chart-topping 21 singer? “That would be amazing! I still haven’t met her but I’d really like to work with her,” she said. “I’m a big fan of hers. It’s just a big coincidence — I’m glad I chose my middle [name] though.”

You can catch Sandé when she hits the road with Coldplay in June.

LA Times Reviews Our Version of Events
June 5th, 2012
Article by SarahLeave a comment? • Categorized under: Our Version Of Events

Opening with a swirl of strings and beats that evokes the glory days of ’90s British dance music (think the underrated group, the Chimes, or a vintage Paul Oakenfold remix), Emeli Sande’s debut CD, “Our Version of Events,” lives up to the hype that has preceded it from the singer’s native U.K. — where it’s been a massive commercial and critical hit. It’s filled with finely crafted, expertly produced love songs about complex, complicated emotions (not a single reference to what she bought someone, or what they bought her), as well as songs thickly peppered with social consciousness.

Highlights include “Daddy,” about the insurmountable magnetism of a man who’s clearly wrong for you. In the hook, when she sings the line, “You’re looking like you really like him, like him…,” her voice shifts to a sultriness that conveys the erotic pull of this ill-suited man. “Mountains,” a love song woven with details of economic struggle; “Suitcase,” sung from the perspective of the one who’s dumped; and “Breaking the Law,” about the lengths to which our heroine will go for her lover; all contain lyrics worthy of Tracy Chapman.

That’s not to say the collection is flawless. At times Sande leans too hard on a catch-in-the-throat quality in her singing (as on “Hope” and “Read All About It, Pt. III”). Some lyrics, as on the track “My Kind of Love,” are suffused with self-pity that also carries a whiff of unexamined superiority, and at times her songwriting can remind you of that quiet, undeniably smart English Lit major whose work slips from confident to self-satisfied.

The greatest weakness though is that on many of her socially conscious songs (the above-mentioned “Hope” and “Read All About It,”) the edges have been buffed away; they’re vague and generic enough to be non-threatening, while the listener who sings along can be flattered (or flatter him or herself) that they’re saying something profound when they really aren’t. But in comparison to the drudge that is contemporary mainstream American pop and R&B, Emeli’s folk-inflected soul/pop is Nina Simone and Bob Dylan all in one.

San Francisco Gate Reviews Our Version of Events

Emeli Sande, “Our Version of Events” (Capitol)

For at least the next year or so, every U.K. female singer who has a soulful voice and favors ballads has to deal with an unenviable fate — being compared with fellow Brit Adele.

That’s what Emeli Sande is facing with her debut, “Our Version of Events.” It doesn’t help that Emeli Sande’s real name is Adele — she started using her middle name when the current queen of pop became a sensation. Also like Adele, Sande has some mournful, heart-wrenching tunes in her repertoire. And like Adele, Sande is a gifted songwriter, co-writing all 14 tracks (including the last song, the gripping “Hope,” with Alicia Keys) on her album.

And finally, like Adele, she makes brilliant music. But what will make her a sensation is that she has a sound that is distinctly her own. While her piercing soprano is reminiscent of a lot of R&B and pop singers (perhaps most like Tamia’s), what sets Emeli apart is her material. “Our Version of Events” is a stunning collection of songs that creatively and imaginatively express age-old themes like heartache, love and more. “Suitcase” is a quivering song about a lover who walks out the door with no explanation. On the stark and beautiful “Breaking the Law,” Sande expresses her devotion to her man by offering to do a litany of criminal acts. And “River,” in which she offers to be a guide, is a gorgeous, piano-based track that is as majestic as its words.

There’s not one throwaway song on the album, just song after song that are must-listens. And yes, that’s another instance where she’s like Adele — or better yet, like Emeli Sande.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: On the sweeping “Maybe,” Sande attempts to find a resolution for a relationship at a stalemate — whether it involves reconciliation or breakup.

Emeli Sande is MTV’s Push Artist of The Week
June 4th, 2012

Scottish soul and R&B singer Emeli Sande got her start like so many noteworthy artists — as a songwriter…and a soon-to-be doctor. Before music became her full-time gig, Emeli was studying medicine at the University of Glasgow while keeping songwriting just a hobby. It was during her fourth year in school when she wrote the hook for a song called “Diamond Rings” and gave it to English rapper Chipmunk. With Sande’s vocals on the track, the song became a top 10 hit, and after penning songs for Cher LloydSusan Boyle and Cheryl Cole(to name a few), Emeli soon landed a record deal with EMI. Needless to say, medicine would have to wait.

Emeli’s made her mark overseas already, having won the coveted Critic’s Choice statue at the 2012 Brit Awards, but now it’s time for you to get to know the “Heaven” singer. We sat down with Emeli, our PUSH artist of the week, and she opened up to us about her first U.S. album release, what she learned from writing for other artists before launching her solo career, and the importance of a hard day’s work: “You always hope maybe [your music] can do well, but you never know. And so finally, to feel like the hard work has paid off, it’s such a relief, and it was really encouraging to keep doing what I was doing.” We’re guessing 13-plus million views on her “Next To Me” video is a bit of a relief as well.

Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events is out stateside June 5.
