Scottish jazz/soul artist Emeli Sandé recently visited The Recording Academy’s headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview and perform a brief acoustic set. Sandé discussed her debut album, Our Version Of Events, performing at the 2012 Summer Olympics and how studying neuroscience has influenced her songwriting, among other topsics. Sandé performed songs from Our Version Of Events, including “Heaven,” “Breaking The Law” and “My Kind Of Love.”

“When the songs came together I really felt it was an album that expressed what I wanted to say to introduce myself,” said Sandé regarding Our Version Of Events. “I feel like lyrically it gives people a real sense of who I am.”

Born Adele Sandé in Aberdeen, Scotland, Emeli Sandé has earned praise from GRAMMY-winning artists including Adele and Alicia Keys. Influenced by artists such as Massive Attack, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone, Sandé began playing clarinet and piano and writing songs at a young age. While studying medicine at Glasgow University, she landed a deal with EMI Music Publishing and subsequently helped pen songs for artists including Cheryl Cole. After moving to London, in 2010 she launched her solo career and released her first singles “Daddy” and “Kill The Boy.” In 2012 Sandé earned the Critics’ Choice Award at the Brit Awards.

Released in the United States in June, Our Version Of Events peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard 200. The album reached No. 1 in the UK. Sandé is currently on tour throughout the United States, with select dates scheduled through November.
